Solids handling is the process of dealing with Biologically Active Sludge from secondary treatment, usually an aeration process. In conventional wastewater plants there are various ways to handle activated sludge. A large centrifuge used for solids handling is the "Decanter Centrifuge." It is widely used in various industries, other than "turd herding" plants. Decanter centrifuges are designed to separate solids from liquids by utilizing centrifugal force. They are effective in separating suspended solids, sludge, and other impurities from wastewater, resulting in cleaner water for discharge or further treatment. These centrifuges come in different sizes, with some capable of handling large volumes of solids to meet the demands of industrial-scale wastewater treatment processes.
Nothing works quite like the centrifuge to separate suspended solids from solution. After the thickening process one can expect 2% to 8% Solids content but a centrifuge can increase that to 35%. Next, the solids are mixed with sawdust, to form a compost which after some retention time to continue drying will be a suitable fertilizer for non potable applications.
